PID-Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
Statistics and Facts
- This disease affects 1 million women each year.
- 100, 000 women become infertile each year because of PID.
- There are no specific tests that can be done to find PID. A pelvic ultrasound can be done to find some of the symptoms.
- PID can be cured with antibiotics. Because this disease affects so many internal organs, many antibiotics are required. If cured, the damage that was caused is not reversible.
Symptoms
- Women- Chlamydia and Gonorrhea can lead to PID. Symptoms can be minor or severe. If PID is caused by Chlamydia or Gonorrhea, very few symptoms appear while damage is being caused to her reproductive organs. Lower abdominal pain can occur, as well as fever, discharge, odor, or pain during intercourse or urination, or irregular vaginal bleeding.
- Men- this disease only affects women.
Damage
- Women- without treatment, permanent damage can be caused to the reproductive organs which can lead to sterility. An ectopic pregnancy (when the fertilized egg remains in the fallopian tubes) can occur. An ectopic pregnancy can lead to the rupture of the fallopian tube, pain, internal bleeding, and even death.
- Men- this disease only affects women.
