Statistics and Facts
- There are 1 million new cases each year.
- 25 percent of women and 20 percent of men have Genital Herpes.
- There is no cure for Genital Herpes. Medication can be taken to control outbreaks but the disease will remain with the person for life.
- Genital Herpes can be diagnosed by visual inspection and a sample from the sore or through a blood test.
Symptoms
- Women- there is a good chance symptoms will not occur. If they do, painful sores and ulcers will appear, along with flu-like symptoms, including fever and swollen glands. There are typically 4 to 5 outbreaks within a year.
- Men- same as women.
Damages
- Women- may lead to hospitalization. It often causes psychological distress for those who are aware they are infected. Genital Herpes can lead to infant death. (Fortunately, it is rare for a woman to pass Genital Herpes to her baby.)
